A message to ladies

Dearest women and girl friends, please take a little time to read this lengthy passage.

Dearest women and girl friends, you should not develop a habit of drinking alcohol, and should not date or marry an alcoholic man. Here is why.

It came to my attention that many of us develop a habit of drinking, and I just read heartbreaking facts about how alcoholism and violence have been known to be correlated for so long in our world, but is still getting so little concern and prevention.

With all due respect to men and boys, I am talking to raise awareness of alcohol abuse & women violence & women sexual assaults.

I am saying this also to support #HeForShe campaign by UN Women which will proceed till the end of 2015. September 20th, 2015 was its first year anniversary.

Every 25th of every month is #OrangeDay to stop women and girls' violence and sexual abuse.

With all due respect to men and boys, women are more often the victims of sexual or violence acts compared to men, especially those attributed to alcoholism. Here are the statistics:

1. In 2013, 35% of women worldwide have experienced physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence. The number goes up to 70% in developing countries (UN Global Statistics)

2. Of all women killed in 2012, almost half were killed by intimate partners (husband/boyfriend/SO)/family members. (Family Medicine Org)

3. Women violence actors are >50% their own HUSBANDS, and 70% of them were UNDER ALCOHOL INFLUENCE during violent act. (Family Medicine Org)

4. A YOUNG ADULT who starts drinking from their teenage years have a much more considerable risk of being an alcohol abuser/addict in their adulthood. Due to faster brain maturity of women compared to men, the same start of drinking age implicates higher rates of addiction to men than women. (TIME Magazine & Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research)

5. Women who drink / engage in risky drinking behavior have higher risk of experiencing violence. Women who are binge/heavy drinkers:
- 89% have reported experiencing interpersonal violence
- 70% have reported experiencing sexual assault.

6. In Indonesia, around 70% of all assaults experienced by women happens at HOME.

7. By province, here sits the order of housewives & women assault victim numbers:
1) Papua
2) Maluku
3) Yogyakarta
4) North Maluku
5) Bengkulu
6) Jambi
7) West Nusa Tenggara
8) Jakarta
9) Lampung
10) Banten
(UN National Outreach: The 2006 Survey of Violence against Women and Children in Indonesia)

I gather all these data because my heart breaks a little witnessing our world. I want to see our young generation restored.

There is only one goal from all these exhaustive campaign efforts: to protect and keep you safe.

There isn't a quick way to stop it, but to start from ourselves, and make the change from now.

"If not me (to stop), who? If not now (to begin), when?"

Dearest women and girl friends, you should not develop a habit of drinking alcohol, and should not date or marry an alcoholic man 😊
